A service unit is an extension of The Salvation Army that functions in communities that do not have Salvation Army building-centered programs directed by a Salvation Army Officer. There are approximately 150 Service Units in the Midland Division of the Salvation Army, a territory serving Missouri and Southern Illinois.

Each unit raises funds to serve its area, primarily through a local Red Kettle Campaign during the Christmas season. All funds raised are sent to the division office, which for the Midland Division is in St. Louis. Checks made directly to The Salvation Army are mailed to the division office. All cash donations and checks made to First Christian Church for the Callaway County Service Unit are deposited in a local account, with a check for that total donation sent to the St. Louis office. The amount collected is then credited to the local unit as part of our annual budget. A full 85% of funds raised by our unit will be available for our budget in Callaway County. Ten percent is given to the national and international outreach of Salvation Army and 5% remains for the services of the Midland Division.

The Service Extension Unit is directed by a local committee which is responsible to the corporation of the Salvation Army, offering charitable activities and services on behalf of its division offices. Members of the local committee for the Callaway County Service Extension Unit are:

Alan Bailey
Marta Carpenter
Shirley Lockhart
Ed Varnum

The local committee develops guidelines for assistance within the area it serves. For this first year of service, our committee has chosen to focus on assistance with utilities. A household may be served one time in a 90 day period, with a limit of $75 to $100.00 within that time period. Clients must apply for utility assistance with CMCA Energy Services before receiving Salvation Army funds. The committee has designated a second priority of families in need of diapers and/or baby formula. Clients will again be served once in a 90 day period. The unit will always communicate and cooperate with other service organizations in offering assistance.

The Callaway County Salvation Army Service Unit will be housed and staffed through the offices of Fulton First Christian Church.
