HERE IS A BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO THE SPIRITUAL GIFTS
The Apostle Paul addresses the presence of spiritual gifts in three main sections of scripture: Romans 12:4-8, I Corinthians 12:7-10, and Ephesians 4:11-13. These lists of gifts include what are often called Sign Gifts. Among these are healing, gifts of speaking in unknown tongues and interpretation of tongues.
The inventory we use includes only the Servant Gifts, which are ways Christ continues his ministry of service and for the building up of the church. The servant gifts are . . .
Administration: the Spirit-given capacity and desire to serve God by organizing, administering, promoting, and leading the various affairs of the church. A person with this gift can recognize the steps needed to reach a certain goal or do a specific task. They can then organize people to do those steps.
Evangelism: the Spirit-given capacity and desire to serve God by leading people who are beyond your natural sphere of influence to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. A person with this gift experiences great joy in seeing people come to Christ and is often consumed with the desire to influence others to a living faith.
Exhortation: the Spirit-given capacity and desire to serve God by motivating others to action by urging them to pursue a course of conduct. A person with this gift finds great joy through encouraging others and offering practical insight on living a full, productive life. Some with this gift work better as teachers in groups, some work better one-on-one.
Giving: is the Spirit-given capacity and desire to serve God by giving of your material resources, far beyond the tithe, to further the work of God. One with this gift has a strong desire to meet the financial needs of your fellow Christians and church members. It brings great joy to know that your gift made an important work possible.
Mercy: the Spirit-given capacity and desire to serve God by identifying with and comforting those who are in distress. One with this gift can understand and show true empathy to others. It brings great joy to enter into the grief or happiness of another and let that person know he or she is not alone.
Pastor-Shepherd: the Spirit-given capacity and desire to serve God by overseeing, training, and caring for the needs of a group of Christians. One with this gift has the potential to be an excellent Sunday school teacher or small group leader. It brings great joy to lead the group beyond teaching, caring for the group and its members and a pastor and friend.
Prophecy: the Spirit-given capacity and desire to serve God by making known what you understand has God’s truth. One with this gift often recognizes dangers or sees outcomes that others often miss. There is a heart-felt burden to make the church or larger society aware of directions that need changing and recognizing the path they should take to a better, more God-pleasing life.
Serving: the Spirit-given capacity and desire to serve God by rendering practical help in both physical and spiritual matters. One with this gift is inclined to work behind the scenes and is gifted to do those functional things that need to be done to enable ministries to happen. It brings great joy to meet the practical needs of fellow Christians and the church.
Teaching: the Spirit-given capacity and desire to serve God by making clear the truth of God's Word with accuracy. One with this gift is more inclined toward in-depth study and discovering the essence of what should be taught, and may be more inclined to research than actual leading of a class. It brings great joy to search the scriptures and share your insights or develop curriculum. One with this gift paired with the gift of pastor-shepherd will make an outstanding small group or classroom teacher.
